You've got to cut cables out one at a time. What's worse is when the contractors and coworkers who do the racking, decide to use the cable management on the rack to stuff in all the cables, making a giant mass of cables where nothing can be removed. Also, the G5 arms lock in on both ends, whereas the G6 arm locks in on one rail only. Our G6 cable management arms are about 10%-15% or so, smaller than the G5 cable management arms. In the grand scheme of things it's not the most important DC design criteria to focus on but I'm just not convinced that they gain you anything over well managed cabling without them and they cost money and use up some small amount of operating cost.

They both really, really retard the flow of hot air into the hot aisle thus necessitating significantly more power draw (and noise) from the fans. I see no significant difference between a D元80G2 arm and a D元80G7 arm, they're both large flaps of metal with bendy parts and a few straps for holding cables to them.

Using them is not instantly evil, it now depends on your setup and use case. While I generally agree, it has to be admitted that the newer cable management arms actually *work*, unlike cable management arms circa 2004. On the flip side I don't like the idea of my collegues unplugging all the cables and not reconnecting a server correctly. I also don't like the idea of 1 race containing all the other cables (8 Network, 1 ILO, 2 pairs Fiber, KVM, and 1 power). My main dilemia seems to be the one power being on the opposite side of the rack for the cable management arm entry. I was debating using them now for the sheer number of cables running to each server in a VM environment.

I have never enjoyed cable management arms on servers for various reason. There are 2 PDU's mounted in the rack (1 on each side) going to seperate UPS's. The rack is an HP rack, extra deep and wide (cable races on both sides) so at least the rack is nice. I have inherieted a rack at the company I work for so I wasn't around for intial 'design'. I seem to be struggling with cable management design with some new VMWare server implementation.
